Where are the wildest places in Britain

Instructions and user guidance

This page explains how the system works. Having read through the previous pages the next step is to start using the on-line GIS mapping tools. The next page you will come across, called 'Making Your Decisions', looks similar to the image below. This page is where you have the chance to choose where you think where wilderness areas are. Using the Java Applet you can create a map showing wilderness areas using checkboxes and slider bars to indicate your choices. The map appears on the right-hand side of the screen while the control buttons are on the left.

Using the Applet you can weight the mapped factors or turning on or off important constraints by clicking checkboxes which are located to the left of the map. By sliding the button in the slider bar to the right you can indicate a greater preference for that factor/criteria. Sliding the button to the left indicates a lower preference. The relative position of all the buttons on the slider bars indicates your relative preference for all the factors/criteria. The map appears in the window by clicking on the 'Show me the map' button in the bottom left-hand corner of the browser window. You can use the map of best locations you have generated, and pick a percentage of the best (most wild) areas using the 'Top Slice' scrollbar. These areas will appear in green. Once you are happy with your choices click on the 'Submit' button to register your decisions. Your web browser must be Java and Javascript enabled.   On-line GIS page
