The next few pages will explain some of the important issues surrounding the problem of defining wild areas in the UK, the relationship with geography and how computer mapping tools (known generally as Geographical Information Systems or GIS) can be used to help solve the complex problem of determining how people view the British landscape and relate what they see to the idea of wilderness. After this you will have the opportunity to use specially designed web mapping tools to map the wilder areas of the country and help us better understand your perceptions of the wilderness concept.
